Dentures are the tried-and-true solution for tooth loss because they’re a versatile way to rebuild your grin. Whether you’ve lost most or all your teeth, your dentist can customize your restoration to look and feel like the ones that went missing.
However, many patients aren’t aware that their jawbone thins without roots in place to stimulate new bone growth every time they bite down, contributing to ill-fitting dentures. If you’re looking for an adhesive to help keep your prosthetics in place, continue reading to learn more about the options so you can pick the best one to meet your needs!
Option #1: Creams
All denture glues are intended to strengthen the bond between your gums and the acrylic foundation to keep it more firmly anchored, but that doesn’t mean they’re all created equally. For instance, one 2014 study found that creams have a higher adhesive strength than powders, so they are often the preferred solution. Furthermore, this type of glue forms a layer of cushion between your connective tissues and your new teeth to avoid developing sore spots, which can be incredibly helpful if they’re new or no longer fit correctly.
These products typically come in tubes that can be easily squeezed to apply short lines onto the underside of your restoration. This can sometimes lead to errors in the application, like oozing, if you use excessive amounts.
Option #2: Powders
Another popular way to stabilize your dentures is by using adhesive powders. Unlike creams, this is meant to be sprinkled liberally over the underside of your dentures to coat the entire surface. Then, thoroughly shake off any extra powder before pressing your prosthetics in place and biting down firmly to form a secure hold.
This easy application is often preferred by patients with mobility issues or those who struggle with applying just the right amount of product to keep their dentures in place.
Option #3: Strips
If you’re looking for a more convenient solution, you might benefit from choosing denture adhesive strips instead. These peel-and-stick strips have pre-applied glue, so you don’t have to worry about how much product to use. Simply moisten them with water, place them on the side of your restoration that presses against your connective tissues, then put them in your mouth and bite firmly to form a bond. These tend to work better with ill-fitting dentures than the other options, but might be more likely to cause a bite misalignment over time.
Thankfully, any adhesive you choose can help keep your dentures in place so you can continue using them to eat, speak, and smile confidently!
