Bruxism: ( Grinding & Clenching)

Bruxism (tooth grinding) is the common habit of grinding the upper and lower teeth together while clenching. It occurs most often at night. The pressure of night grinding is 6x greater than grinding while awake. Do you wake up with a headache, earache or neck pain?

“One of the most unusual aspects of bruxism (grinding and clenching) is that often the one who does it is not even aware of the habit.” Dr. Peter Dawson

Long term, the damage can be dramatic. We now know that grinding of the upper and lower teeth can lead to worn enamel, enlarged jaw muscles, split teeth, fractured fillings and bone loss and tooth loss.

Jaw-Joint Teeth Relationship

The jaw joint is where the lower jaw meets the skull. It is where the jaw hinges to open and close. Unfortunately serious dental problems begin silently. Decay never hurts until it is very deep, near the nerve. Gum disease never hurts until there is extreme bone loss. The same with jaw related problems. TMJ. We treat complex jaw issues, bite issues, and can help minimize or even eliminate migraine headaches and muscle/facial pain if jaw joint related. Sometimes there are several components to the problem.  We can discern if that is the case as well and help direct you to other well trained and qualified healthcare professionals who can address those other components.

How we do things and what we do

Complete Examination

The first step in our office is to listen to you. We want to get to know you and make sure you are comfortable before we treat you.

A Complete Examination is a complete and thorough evaluation of your mouth and surrounding, supporting parts.
It is so very important.

The Complete Examination is designed to minimize treatment for you. Common repair dentistry focuses on just that: repair. It’s reactive. Complete dentistry is proactive. Complete dentistry offers you the opportunity to regain your oral health to its optimum. Wouldn’t you agree it is better to stay well than have to get well, frequently?

During your Complete Examination we examine your teeth, surrounding gums, TMJ, cheeks, lips, throat, tongue, lymph nodes and muscles of your jaw area. This called the masticatory (Chewing) system.

We’ll give you a Stress Beeper. So that if you are worried about anything you can signal us stop immediately. Just push the buzzer button.

“Since there is no effective way to achieve maintainable oral health without harmony of all parts of the masticatory system, the total system must be evaluated.” Dawson, Peter E. Evaluation, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Occlusal Problems Second Edition, pp 1-13.

We perform oral cancer and head/neck cancer screening and examination.
TMJ: The Jaw Joint: I use a special device to listen to the inside of your jaw joint to aid in evaluation of its condition and the disc position. Early intervention can prevent major TMJ problems.

Your bite is carefully analyzed. Models of your mouth are placed on a special machine in our on-site laboratory. Checklist You’ll notice that during the examination we use a checklist. The procedure is rather like a pre-flight check that a pilot performs before take-off. This ensures nothing is overlooked.

We examine your teeth
Some of the many things we check about your teeth are: wear, mobility abrasion, microscopic cracks and broken fillings. We look at your old black, mercury, fillings to see if their surface is swollen or chipped and in need of repair.
We note areas of early decay that may need preventative treatment.

Your Gums:

We examine you for signs of gum disease. Separation of the tooth and gum and bleeding of the gums (without discomfort or pain) are early signs of advancing gum disease.

Any area of your mouth where plaque is collecting is charted so we can help you to improve your cleaning methods.

“Without diagnosis there can no treatment”.     Hippocrates

“Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.” Unknown

“It is the dentist’s role to examine the entire system and assess the current status, make a diagnosis and develop a lifetime master treatment plan that will achieve optimal comfort, function, health and esthetics.

Once the optimal results are achieved with a comprehensive approach, it is quite remarkable how little future dentistry is needed. Unexpected trips to the dentist to deal with dental emergencies are minimized.”

“It is the dentist’s obligation to present the very best treatment possible.”
Dr. L.D. Pankey, Famous Dental Mentor

We pride ourselves on our thorough and complete oral examinations. This is the benchmark of our quality and pursuit for excellence. “Quality is free.” Investing more planning time prior to treatment consistently saves time, minimizes the number of additional procedures and improves the end result with any case.

“Look before you leap,
Think before you speak.
You can only do so by being well informed. Knowledge is not power, applied knowledge is.”

Digital X-Rays

This system allows for the ability to instantly produce the very best possible diagnosis. And, less radiation: that’s
right, by up to 90% less.

We take three basic kinds of X-rays:

Close-up X-rays to check for decay between your teeth and to give thedetailed view of individual teeth and their surrounding bone.

Full Jaw X-rays (Panorex) that show the whole of your upper and lower jaws on one film – not so detailed as the
close-up films

TMJ views–show the position of your jaw joint structures relative to one another.

Dream Smile

What is your “Dream Smile”?
In many cases, we can straighten and realign crooked teeth–almost instantly. Also manage gumline discrepancies as you can see in above photo.  The smile is a composition and blends with surrounding structures.  Formulas and proportions are used as guidelines to enhance a predictable result.

You may be bothered by a black filling that shows when you smile wide. Undetectable tooth color blended fillings can eliminate these worries. It can all blend with your own smile.
