No one wants to have a dental emergency<\/a>, but accidents do happen. Anyone who\u2019s ever had a tooth knocked out for whatever reason knows the panic and fear that come with it. Thankfully, your dentist is there to help you through it! Keep reading to learn about 5 steps you can take if you ever find yourself in this unfortunate circumstance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Step #1: Stay Calm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve just had an accident that resulted in a tooth falling out, it\u2019s important to stay calm. This can be hard, especially if you\u2019re in pain or were taken by surprise. Take a few deep breaths to keep your heart rate calm. If you\u2019re bleeding, find a clean cloth or some gauze, hold it over the socket of your tooth, and bite down. This should slow the flow until you can get to the dentist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step #2: Find the Tooth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In some cases, the tooth can be saved- but timing is essential. You won\u2019t be able to put it back after about 30-60 minutes. If you\u2019ve just sustained an injury, it\u2019s imperative that you find the fallen tooth as soon as you can. When you do, pick it up by the crown and not by the sensitive root. This could damage it so that it cannot be put back into position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step #3: Keep it Moist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To keep the tooth viable, it\u2019s important to keep it moist. Chemicals used to treat many public sources of water can damage the root of the tooth, so don\u2019t put it into a glass of tap water. Instead, you can place it in a container with some milk, or even use some of your saliva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step #4: If Possible, Put It Back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The safest and most natural environment to store your tooth is back in your mouth. If you\u2019re able, you can try putting the tooth back into its socket right away. Gently press it into place with your fingers (always touching the crown), then bite down gently. This can keep it in position until your dentist can assess the situation.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step #5: Call the Dentist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you haven\u2019t already, be sure you call your dentist! Let them know you\u2019ve had an emergency, and they\u2019ll work to get you in right away. They understand the importance of acting quickly and efficiently in these scenarios. Once you arrive, they\u2019ll examine your condition to decide on possible treatment options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s important to call your dentist first instead of an emergency room unless your life is in imminent danger. Only your dentist has the right instruments and expertise to effectively repair the damage. In many cases, even if they can\u2019t redeem the natural tooth there are other options to restore or replace it. The best thing you can do to help yourself is remain calm, keep the natural tooth if you can, and get to your dentist as quickly as you\u2019re able.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
