CARING FOR YOUR TEMPORARY CROWN OR FILLING
Here are a few ways to promote healing, prevent complications, and make yourself more comfortable after your tooth is prepared and a temporary crown or bridge is placed.
-the temporaries are fabricated of a special hardened type of plastic.
-be mindful of the type of food you eat to avoid cracking the temporary crown.
DISCOMFORT:
-the tooth/teeth/gums may be sensitive for awhile, this will resolve over time.
***** RINSE WITH WARM SALT WATER SEVERAL TIMES A DAY.
-thermal changes/ temperature changes can cause you sensitivity, this is normal for now.
After the tooth has been prepared, you may experience some minor discomfort and sensitivity. You can help reduce this by taking aspirin or Tylenol, etc., every four hours and rinsing with a warm salt water solution several times a day. (½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.) Brush your gums & your teeth very well and frequently (gently). This will heal the area as quickly as possible. Generally the gums will heal within a couple of days to a week or so. It is very important to gently brush your gums even if they are tender.
If you have prolonged or severe pain, swelling, bleeding or fever, call immediately, and we will give you the exact instructions on how to care for your problem.
CLEANING: Brushing and Flossing:
Brushing:
-brush your temporary teeth well, just like they are your own. When brushing, be extra gentle in that area. If it continues to be sensitive after three or four days please call the office.
Flossing:
-be extra careful when flossing around the temporaries, you may loosen it.
"Pop" the floss down around the temporary cap but then release one end of the floss and pull it through and out with the other. DO NOT "POP" THE FLOSS UP AND OUT...this will pull the temporary out.
DISLODGEMENT OF TEMPORARY CROWN OR FILLING:
-the temporary is placed over your tooth with a temporary type cement, be careful not to eat sticky foods that can pull off the temporary crown.
-if the temporary should become loose it is very important to alert the office right away, this does not mean it is an emergency, we just want to be able to advise you of what to do.
